Getting away and Going within

I’m about to go on vacation. I like vacation for many reasons, but one benefit it provides me is an opportunity to step outside of familiar routine and surroundings. This doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I feel it is part of my aliveness to return to a more raw self,…a self I can explore like it’s still an unknown frontier.

We get mechanical at times in our daily schedules. Often, I find myself in the mornings working like a well oiled machine,…arms flying around the countertop getting coffee, food for the cats, vitamins, warming milk, rinsing dishes. It’s as if I am inhabited by a robot as I watch my arms move automatically in the rituals of “every morning”.

Traveling will mean I can’t predict the next encounter. I’ll have to be present in a whole other way. I can’t anticipate where I’ll get my next coffee, meal, bed, or how the cats are cared for while I’m away. I can’t be in “control” of the schedule I’ll be part of as each day unfolds. The benefit of this is that I will have to check in with myself more consciously to know how I “am” in the moment. No assumptions.

I think daily rituals are vital to keeping the pace in this culture and for providing some continuity in the human experience. The cost, however, might be that we forget to check in with ourselves and see if something novel might be required to heighten our senses. Habits are just habits. They do not define us.

Which routines, rituals, habits, and behaviors do you still appreciate? Which are no longer useful to you? Have you outgrown a part of your life which you continue because it is just ‘what you do‘? As you go through your day, check in every so often and see how your routine feels. If it is joyful,…of course keep doing it! If it is useful, by all means, continue. But if it has become a lifeless ‘requirement’ of living,….get creative and shake things up a bit!

Some examples might be trying a different recreation, recipe, way of communicating with your intimate ones, moving the furniture, learning a new skill or gaining new knowledge, daring to dream, painting a wall, etc.

Express yourself as you move and breathe and see what happens. Even without leaving your home, you may find a refreshing new perspective about yourself and the life you live. Adventure is a part of life that helps us stay in our bodies and in our selves. Enjoy!
